Radiology Residency Training Program
The IPI Laboratory participates in the imaging informatics component of the University of Southern California (USC) Radiology Residency Program (Residency), which is a four-year highly competitive, ACGME accredited residency program with 44 trainees. Prior to entrance into the Residency Program, the candidate is required to complete a year of clinical practice–surgical, medical or transitional. Since the radiology department is affiliated with the USC Keck School of Medicine, the Residency offers rotations to third and fourth year medical students, both from USC as well as from outside medical schools. USC residents train under the auspices of 53 experienced and renowned faculty members, with the ultimate goal of becoming knowledgeable, self-reliant, independent, and comprehensively-trained radiologists who will go on to serve the community with true compassion and care.
Primarily a LA County-based program, the large volume of patients and numerous diagnostic procedures enable all of the residents to have hands-on experience during their training. Few hospitals in the world can boast the patient population diversity of Los Angeles County Hospital with local and immigrant patients from Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East, generating a clinical caseload with a wide range of diseases and presentations. The high volume of diverse patients coupled with the Level 1 Trauma Center designation results in a constant exposure to all aspects of diagnostic radiology. There is an opportunity for training in general radiology, procedural radiology, and advanced imaging, in association with understanding the appropriate use of radiology in a wide range of clinical scenarios.
The principle objective of the Residency Program is to provide a balanced educational curriculum emphasizing conventional radiography as well as advanced imaging modalities. Residents train primarily at Los Angeles County Hospital – University of Southern California Medical Center, but also rotate through USC University Hospital, USC/Norris Cancer Center, two Imaging Centers, and one new Healthcare Consultation Center with a state-of-the-art PACS/RIS/Voice Recognition total healthcare solution system. Because this is an integrated program, the Residency offers a unique educational opportunity to experience a large, high-volume county facility, a regional cancer center, and a private quaternary care hospital with advanced surgical services that include multiple organ transplantation, advanced Musculoskeletal, Neurosurgical and Gastrointestinal intervention. We foresee the emergent importance of integrating imaging informatics in the Residency Program.
